Batik Tulis Lintang Malang
Combining the power of freedom and harmony in life, this batik combines two legendary patterns. Garudeya, carved in the reliefs of Kidal temple, symbolizes freedom. While Padma, inspired by the jarik (historical Javanese cloth) pattern of the mother of Ken Dedes in Singosari, exudes cultural balance. On each piece, there is rich artistic expression of cultural identity suitable for formal and informal occasions.
The philosophy of Padma Garudeya batik includes two main elements: freedom and spirituality. The Garudeya pattern is taken from the reliefs of Kidal temple, depicted with Garudeya freeing his mother from a giant, symbolizing the freedom of the shackled soul. It reminds us of the importance of freedom and the struggle against immorality.
On the other hand, the Padma pattern is inspired by the jarik relief of Ken Dedes’ mother in Singosari, which depicts a lotus flower with eight petals. Each petal represents a cardinal direction that symbolizes cultural balance. Through the combination of these two patterns, Padma Garudeya batik is not only a work of art, but also a reminder of history, freedom, and deep harmony. This philosophy is reflected in every piece of fabric produced, giving deeper meaning and value to the wearer.
The Garudeya pattern is found on a relief at Kidal temple which depicts Garudeya freeing his mother from a giant. A symbol of the freedom of the soul that is shackled by wrath. On the other hand, the Padma pattern was researched from the jarik pattern of Ken Dedes’ mother in Singosari, which is characterized by an eight-petal lotus flower. Each petal represents a cardinal direction, emphasizing our ability to adapt to various environments. This pattern reflects the importance of cultural adaptation and balance in our surroundings.
Through this in-depth research, Ita Fitriyah managed to combine these two historic and symbolic patterns into one beautiful and meaningful batik work. This discovery process shows Batik Tulis Lintang’s dedication in preserving and promoting Indonesia’s cultural heritage through research and innovation.
The process of making Padma Garudeya batik begins with manually drawing the patterns on the fabric using hot wax with a canting (a special pen for batik making which stores hot wax and diffuses the melting wax onto fabric following designed patterns) which requires high precision and patience. Once the pattern is drawn, the fabric is dipped into prepared synthetic dyes. The dyeing process is repeated several times to achieve the desired color. After dyeing is completed, the fabric is dried, and the remaining wax is removed by boiling. This process produces sharp and durable batik patterns. Each stage in the making of Padma Garudeya batik is carried out with great care and expertise, ensuring that each piece of fabric produced has high quality and artistic value.
